AMERICA FIRST. EARTH LAST.

·

I’m not going to comment on why I feel Mr Trump’s announcement today of withdrawing from the Paris Accord was so reckless. Why bother? I’m preaching to the converted amongst (most of) my Facebook friends. Most of the ‘facts’ he presented today have already been debunked. He kind of just said ‘We’re out because I can make a better deal’. Hmmm … OK. He alone can forge a better deal than the Paris Accord? I can’t wait.

Instead I’ll comment on why I woke up today and didn’t feel doomsday was upon us.

Today, Mr Trump did what climate change awareness groups have been trying to do for years. He put ‘climate change’ on everyone’s lips. Everyone is talking about it today … and that is good. There are lengthy reviews of the details of the Paris Accord, technical reviews on how the United States is the second largest emitter of carbon in the world, and scientific reviews on what impact a slight rise in temperature would have on our livelihoods. This is good. This is great. We need to be talking about climate change every day.

I have faith in American cities, states and private industry. There are so many of them who are not waiting for Washington to get its act together. So many who have set their own goals for reducing carbon emissions. The cities are led by mayors, like Pittsburgh’s Bill Peduto, who lashed out at Mr Trump who was misguided to think he was working in the best interests of American cities and not Paris. Pittsburgh will follow the Paris Accord despite what Mr Trump and his science-starved minions think.

I am excited about the renewable energy industry. Mr Trump needs to do a bit of homework about creating long-term jobs. The solar and wind industries are each creating jobs at a rate 12 times faster than that of the rest of the US economy. More jobs minus fewer carbon emissions = prosperity for all.

The EU and China are bonding together to give our Planet Earth a fighting chance. And I like what I see. China recognises that is has a big problem with emissions, but it is at least addressing that problem. Leaders in the EU and China have placed their faith in science and there are some very very smart people addressing some very complex issues. They are the true world leaders now.

Today is a very sad day in US and world history. But I have faith that the resistance will rise and the Trump Asteroid will miss Planet Earth.
